Willem Bauer, draft of the hut for Geertruida Everts in Walden
Drawing, ca 1901.
In 1898, Van Eeden bought a country estate near Bussum as the place where he wanted to establish the Walden Colony, named after Henry David Thoreau’s book Walden or Life in the Woods. On the grounds, Van Eeden had a villa built for his family and huts for himself and other ‘settlers’. The villa as well as the huts was designed by the architect Willem Bauer (1862-1904), who became one of the colony’s first inhabitants.
