- Description
- Houten beeld, in staande houding, van een politie-oppasser (oppas, kapetengan). Hij houdt het koord vast waarmee de verdachte aan beide polsen gebonden is. Zijn uniform draagt aan de onderzijde der mouwen de sergeantsstrepen: een V-vormige uitmonstering van goud galon. Om de onderzijde der mouwen is een zoom van oranjekleurig laken: de politie-oppasser is ofwel verbonden aan een bestuursambtenaar (uitmonstering in oranje of geel) ofwel aan een rechterlijk ambtenaar (uitmonstering in rood). Dit beeld maakt deel uit van een groep van 11 figuren, voorstellend een zitting van een inheemse rechtsbank. De armen zijn bij de schouders beweegbaar. De rechtspraak in Nederlands-Indië werd onderscheiden in inheemse rechtspraak en gouvernementsrechtspraak. De inheemse rechtspraak werd door het koloniale gezag gehandhaafd, deels uit politieke overwegingen, deels omdat het gouvernement niet over de benodigde gelden en mankracht beschikte.
