Entrance to the Fourth technical school, Amsterdam, 1922. Architect: A.J. Westerman. Sculptor: H. Krop. Photographer: unknown.
The Fourth technical school Het Sieraad (The Jewel) is a good illustration of a successful integration of the visual arts with architecture.
It was erected under the supervision of the Amsterdam department of public works, which believed in uplifting the masses through architecture and the arts: beautiful surroundings benefit cultural development. The architect Westerman designed the outer walls and the sculptor Hildo Krop was responsible for the decoration. The tuff statues of a man and a woman framing the main entrance personify industrialization and nature respectively. The man is surrounded by machinery and a steam engine, the woman by flower stalks, a small deer and birds. Each statue features part of the motto of the socialist leader P.L. Tak: Zonder moeite niets (Nothing without effort).
