Kuyper was the founder of the first political party in the Netherlands (the ARP – Anti Revolutionary Party), founder of the VU University Amsterdam, driving force behind the formation of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands and Prime Minister from 1901 to 1905.The artist Jan Veth made various portraits of Kuyper, of which this pencil sketch is one.
