For much of the seventeenth century, the Protestants in France, which was essentially Catholic, were tolerated. In 1685, however, when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes this tolerance came to a brutal end. Many fled the country and for those unable to flee things did not work out well, as illustrated by this print.
