- De dijk op deze foto is de Geniedijk. Het woord 'genie' komt uit het Frans en heeft onder andere een militaire betekenis. In die zin betekent het, het wapen dat balast is met het aanleggen van alle militaire werken en dan met name die werken die betrekking hebben op de verdediging van versterkte plaatsen. De Geniedijk maakt deel uit van De Stelling van Amsterdam. Deze stelling is een ring van verdedigingswerken rondom Amsterdam, waarvan de aanleg in 1880 begon. De stelling was bedoeld als reduit voor de Nederlandse landsverdediging. Toen in 1914 deze stelling voor het grootste gedeelte klaar was (op vier onvoltooide forten na) werd al duidelijk dat het een achterhaald project was omdat oorlogen nu vanuit de lucht gevoerd werden.
