Airmail poster by Jan Bons.
In 1951, Jan Bons designed an airmail postage stamp, depicting a seagull, which was issued in two denominations and colors. It appears that the PTT (Post, Telegraph and Telephone) was taken by the cooperation and in 1957 Bons was commissioned to make an advertising poster for the use of airmail stickers.
In designing the poster simple techniques were used to achieve the desired effect. A letter folded to depict an airplane, showing an airmail sticker, flies against a bright blue background. This clearly depicts the theme of airmail. The hand of the postman in uniform combined with the roaming text illustrates the benefits of using airmail stickers. The poster was also issued as post box poster that, as the name implies, could be attached to post boxes.
This was Bons’ only design for a poster but the designer was commissioned to design more stamps for the PTT. He designed these stamps between 1951 and 2002: more than 50 years of cooperation!
