- Description
- A letter from the governor of Nagasaki to the supreme headman or ‘Opperhoofd’ of the Dutch trading post on Deshima. The letter had been translated into Dutch by Japanese interpreters and it is their seals the letter carries at the bottom. Most of the Dutch headmen did not master the Japanese language as the Japanese authorities more or less forbade them from learning it. In spite of this ban, a few of them, including Isaac Titsingh and Hendrik Doeff, nevertheless succeeded in learning to speak Japanese fluently. This is one of the reasons that they were able toexercise greater influence than the headmen who did not speak the language.
