Plaat nummer XXVII uit "Voyage á Surinam et dans l'intérieur de la Guiane" van J. G. Stedman. De Europese plantage-eigenaar, of -directeur rookt een pijp, terwijl een slavin een drankje voor hem inschenkt. — John Gabriel Stedman (1744 -1797) nam in 1760 dienst bij de Schotse brigade, die onder gezag van de Staten Generaal stond. Hij werd in 1773 als kapitein naar Suriname gezonden om de bosnegers te bestrijden. In woord en beeld beschreef hij de veldtochten tegen de opstandelingen in 'Narrative of a five years' expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam. ' uitgegeven in Londen in 1796.
