- Een zwaarbewapend pinasschip ligt aan een rotsachtige kust van de Kaapverdische eilanden klaar om geladen te worden met zout. Twee mannen scheppen het zout in een kruiwagen om het vervolgens naar het schip te brengen. Zout was een van de belangrijkste producten die handelaars uit de Republiek naar het Oostzeegebied vervoerden. Vaak werd het ruwe zout eerst nog in de Republiek geraffineerd, voor het in Oostzeegebieden verkocht werd. De route naar de Kaapverdische eilanden, voor de kust van Noord-Afrika, was niet ongevaarlijk. De schepen die hiervoor gebruikt werden moesten daarom vrij zwaar bewapend zijn. Een pinas, zoals op deze prent staat afgebeeld, voldeed prima aan deze eis.
