- De Gunungan (berg) wordt gebruikt om tijdens de pauzes vóór het scherm te zetten. Het dient ook om het begin en einde van de voorstelling en het begin en einde van elke episode aan te geven. Ir. J.F. Wolterson (24-3-74'), van Stichting Bosbouwproefstation 'de Dorschkamp', Wageningen, die een foto ontving van deze babat voor publikatie in een boek voor het staatsbosbeheer, zegt hierover het volgende: Onderaan de gunungan zijn de hoofden te zien van Semar en Petruk. Zij zijn de aardse dienaren van de godheid en houden de boom in stand. Als teken daarvan dragen ze een bijl (hier niet afgebeeld). Semar, rechts, is te herkennen aan zijn ronde kop met vooruitstekende voortanden. Petruk is te herkennen aan zijn lange neus. De boom staat op een berg van de wereld en reikt tot in de hemel. De oppervlakte van de wereld eindigt in een horizon van vulkanen. De boom heeft negen takken. In de kruin zit de vogel Garuda, het rijdier van de god Vishnu. Het doel van het wayangspel is om contact met de voorouders/goden tot stand te brengen. De gunungan is het uitgangspunt voor het leggen van dit contact.
