Marche de la Cavalerie = Togt der ruitery [March of the cavalry]
We do not know much about the owners of catchpenny prints, but occasionally we catch a glimpse of one of them. In nice scribbles the owner of this print wrote his name, age and town on it. Klaas Fregeres from Broek in Waterland in the province of North-Holland was 11 years old, when he was given this print as a present in 1826, because he had done 63 sums in one single afternoon. Whether the weather was nice on that day, and he might have preferred to play outside, is not recorded. Anyway, with this print he was able to ‘play soldiers’, as it contains 16 illustrations of soldiers: musicians, hussars and Mamelukes (originally soldiers of slave origin).
