Zie eens dien dapperen Sneeker! (Just look at that brave man from Sneek!)
Multatuli (1820-1887) (pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker)
“Zie eens dien dapperen Sneeker!” (Just look at that brave man from Sneek) Multatuli, civil servant in the Dutch East Indies, but also a writer, wrote to Professor Johannes van Vloten. Clearly, the Sneeker Courant (the newspaper of the town of Sneek) had taken sides with Douwes Dekker, a fact that was highly appreciated. Remarkable is the friendly tone in which this letter is written. Both prior to and after 1868, the two gentlemen regularly found themselves at loggerheads with each other.
Letter to Johannes van Vloten, 17 July 1868.
