A hundred copies were published of Boutens’ first volume of verse. The copy on view is No. 30; it bears a handwritten dedication dated 1895. At the time, Boutens was teaching at the Noorthey boarding school for boys and he dedicated this copy to his 16-year-old pupil and friend H.G.A. Obreen. It is the earliest dedication known to have been inscribed by Boutens in a volume of his own work.
