Two women from the Mentawai Islands
C. Nieuwenhuis accompanied Dutch expeditions to the then Netherlands East Indies and military campaigns into their interior, as photographer. At the time, photography was still a difficult technique necessitating voluminous, heavy cameras and developing trays filled with chemicals. There was a great risk of photographs going wrong, especially under tropical conditions. But C. Nieuwenhuis succeeded in making many good photographs of people in their own surroundings, like this one of two women from the Mentawai Islands.
