Construction documents Schröder house
Rietveld’s first major architectural commission requiring specifications: a plan with drawings describing the project. Rietveld was not a qualified engineer, which is clear from the mistakes he made. For example, the floor beams of the ground floor incorrectly run parallel to the beams of the next floor. This has been corrected by cutting out a piece and gluing on a new beamed floor. Another ‘mistake’ was the hatch pattern used for the adjoining wall: the hatching for brickwork should have been horizontal but the hatching was vertical, representing a tiled roof. Fortunately, a blueprint had been made, before the changes were made. The blueprint also shows that Rietveld had initially drawn living areas on the first floor (mentioning sliding panels). But because he did not expect this to be approved he changed the specification to ‘attic’.
