- Foto, zw/w. De kathedraal of Ütse binnen het klooster van Samye. De foto is binnen de grote ommuring van het complex, vanuit een straat gemaakt. Tegen de linker- en de rechterkant van de foto zien we muren van gebouwen. De straat verbreedt zich en aan het einde daarvan staat de Ütse. We kijken waarschijnlijk tegen de westkant van de muur en kathedraal. De Ütse staat binnen een dikke ommuring van twee verdiepingen. De begane grond is een gang om het hele complex heen. Aan de binnenkant wordt het plafond gesteund door twee rijen pilaren. Op de bovenverdieping bevinden zich monnikencellen. Op de foto te zien aan de rij ramen. De gehele lengte van deze muur is niet op de foto te zien. Daarachter, in het midden van de foto, prijkt de grote kathedraal. — De Ütse, ook bekend als Tsuglag Khang, telt drie verdiepingen en heeft een oppervlakte van 6000 m2. Elke verdieping heeft een hoogte van 5,5 tot 6 m. Het ontwerp is een synthese van Tibetaanse, Chinese en Indiase stijlen. Het klooster, de oosterlijke ingang en de eerste twee verdiepingen zijn typisch Tibetaans. Zij zijn gebouwd uit steen. De derde verdieping is Chinees en opgebouwd uit bakstenen. Vooral in het plafond en de consoles bovenop de pilaren, zien we een grote Chinees Buddhistische invloed. De bovenverdieping, geheel uit hout gebouwd, is Indiaas en eert India als bron van het buddhisme hiermee en is tevens symbolisch voor het triomf van de Indiase school in Tibet. — Samye is kleiner dan de Indiase tempelcomplexen maar is volgens hetzelfde grondplan gebouwd. Het centrale gebouw, de Ütse, representeerd de heilige berg Meru (of Sumeru; die de wereldas voorstelt, centrum van het universum), en de rest van het complex heeft de structuur van een mandala. Als enige van de grote kloostercomplexen, vertoond Samye karakteristieken die uniek zijn voor de vroege Pala monumenten van India. — Geen van de andere kloosters hebben de volgende architecturale karakteristieken: — )de sterke navolging en interpretatie van de mandala-structuur volgens de Indiase cosmologie, — )de incorporatie van diverse artistieke stromingen en het gebruik van handwerklieden uit vreemde landen, — )het unieke Tibetaanse idioom om voor elke verdieping een geheel ander ontwerp of stijl te gebruiken. — Deze drie overwegingen (?) leveren bewijs voor het ontstaan van Samye in de Yarlung-dynastie. Hoogst waarschijnlijk zijn de Ütse en enkele hieraan geassocieerde gebouwen gesticht in de tijd van de Eerste Verspreiding van het Buddhisme in de 8ste eeuw. (Chan, 300 ev) — Foto's gemaakt in opdracht van het Keizerlijk Russisch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap. Fotografen Norzunov en Tsybikof waren beide lamaisten en hadden toegang tot de verboden stad Lhasa. — Oplage: 12
