- Description
- This picture shows Japanese men exercising. During the Edo period (1603-1868), many aspects of cultural life flourished in Japan. Traditionally, a member of the samurai class carried two swords. Practicing sword fighting was considered part of the education. At the time, many instructors developed different ways to safely practice the art of sword fighting. Shinai, light swords made of bamboo, and the characteristic headpieces seen in the picture clearly illustrate this. Nowadays, sword fighting is practiced as a sport, called kendo (the way of the sword).
