Old paintings X-rayed, June-October 1967
This photograph shows viewers a number of the Centraal Museum’s top items, among which De aanbidding van de drie koningen (The adoration of the Magi), painted by Abraham Bloemaert in 1624, and De Sint Antoniuskapel in de Sint Janskerk te Utrecht (St. Anthony’s chapel in the St. Jans Church in Utrecht) by Pieter Saenredam. On the X-ray images of the details suspended next to these paintings, it is possible to distinguish underlying representations. The Centraal Museum was one of the first museums to make this kind of information available to the public. Bringing the study of painting materials and techniques into the open became a tradition, which the museum continues to this day. Fitting in this tradition is the series of six exhibitions subsidized by the Foundation Victor Heiloo for restoration and technical research, the last of which was held from 13 October 2007 to 13 January 2008.
