Long-eared bat
Long-eared bat, Vespertilio auritus (Linnaeus) now known as Plecotus auritus (Linnaeus).
Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) published the first volumes of his Histoire Naturelle in 1749. This comprehensive encyclopaedia about life on earth would eventually be comprised of 44 volumes containing innumerable etchings. Buffon was, among other, appointed superintendent of the royal gardens by King Louis XV. The castles, pleasure gardens and churches that Buffon depicted as background for his animal prints resulted in typical Buffon prints with a royal touch.
