John Bunyan (1628-1688)
Bunyan, a tinker by trade, became a Puritan pastor in Baptist communities late in life. He is famous for his Pilgrim’s progress, a spiritual allegory on the life of a Christian on earth. He wrote this book in prison, where he was confined several times for refusing to stop preaching. The Bunyan collection found at the VU University library is one of the largest outside the Anglo-Saxon countries.
