- Het Noord-Hollandse landschap heeft er niet altijd zo uit gezien als nu, er gaat een geschiedenis van duizenden jaren aan vooraf. De oudste delen, Texel, Wieringen en het duinlandschap liggen het hoogst. In 1575 had Noord-Holland nog veel binnenmeren tussen de duinen en het Gooi. De Noordzee in het westen en de Zuiderzee in het oosten konden het land zomaar binnen stromen. In het begin van de 17e eeuw lieten rijke Amsterdamse kooplieden de meren ten noorden van Amsterdam droogleggen met molens. In 1852 werd de Haarlemmermeer leeggepompt met behulp van stoomgemalen. Na de uitvoering van de Zuiderzeewerken in de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw ging Noord-Holland er uitzien zoals we het nu kennen.
