Martha van Vloten (1856-1943) and Van Eeden were married in 1886. The marriage failed because of the more-or-less platonic relations Van Eeden entertained with other women. They divorced in 1907 and Van Eeden married the singer Geertruida Everts. Martha, who had put up with a lot from her husband and had supported him through thick and thin, remained his friend.
