The symbolic tale De kleine Johannes takes place in a fantasy world. The story describes how a little boy grows into an adult and his quest for insight and a meaning to life. Frederik van Eeden wrote it in 1884, while still a student, using simple exercise books to do so. In one of them he added some small drawings.
