Beatrijs 1908
Beatrijs. [Haarlem], Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, [1908]. 56 p, 16 x 22cm.
Originally, only four copies were printed of Boutens’ adaptation of this Maria legend, all of them richly illustrated by G.W.J. Bruins. This copy was given to the mother of D. Bruins, the illustrator’s son, on the occasion of his engagement (see the calligraphic inscription on the inside of the front cover). D. Bruins donated the copy on view, the only one that is known to have survived, to the Zeeland Library.
The first copy was probably given to Boutens, but it was not found in his estate. The second one should be in the archives of the printers, but it has not been located. Initially, only the printed, as yet unillustrated pages of the fourth copy were recovered; D. Bruins was under the impression that these pages had been ‘cleared out’ later.
The digitized copy shown here is number 3. It is bound in vellum and the title on the spine is in gold. It beautifully adorned with initials, mainly in the colors light red, blue and gold, and the margins are decorated as well.
