Edgard Claes and Alain Taral
In the past, binders worked individually or in small workshops. There was probably a certain division of work already apparent at an early stage. A journeyman or apprentice carried out the easier tasks, the master was responsible for processing the expensive leather and taking care of the minute stamping. This situation was certainly a matter of a strong hierarchical relation.
Nowadays, many French art bookbinders work with specialists. A reputable bookbinder designs a decoration and has a “doreur” carry out the work. This ensures a certain degree of perfection. This way of working, however, is hardly found in other countries. This binding is the result of a very special cooperation. The front cover and the spine have been made by the French binder Alain Taral in burl wood with wood inlays of other wood types. The back cover, made by the Belgian binder Edgard Claes, is of sanded polycarbonate with onyx and carnelian inlays. There is absolutely no evidence of hierarchy in the tasks here. The spectacular design by Claes has resulted in a harmonious whole despite the differences in style between the binders.
