Netherlands, Middelburg. Suenonius Mandelgreen. 1736
Bookbinders in the 18th century were craftsmen. They learned bookbinding through an apprenticeship under a master and had to take several tests, in accordance with regulations of the guild. The guild also set the so-called masterpiece, a sort of examination in which printers and binders had to make a piece of work meeting specific requirements. Such regulations have been found for several cities.
They appear to differ greatly but not a single regulation demanded the luxury and technical skill of their journeyman that has been shown by Suenonius Mandelgreen in this binding. The binding, nevertheless, has the text “trial piece” written on it. Mandelgreen, however, came from Sweden and had probably done his masterpiece there. He may have made this binding to attract new clients.
