Van Schurman was a very talented woman. She was a self-educated scholar, poet and artist. In 1636, she became the first female student to be admitted to study at the University of Utrecht. She is depicted here with a book on her lap as a sign of her knowledge. In 1669, Van Schurman joined the quietist sect of Labadists founded by mystic Jean de Labadie.
