Chamber of culture
Dutch artists were given the definitive signal to rebel against the occupation when the Nederlandsche Kultuurkamer 'NKK' (Dutch Chamber of Culture) was established on 25 November 1941. This NKK pretended to be a professional association of all artists. In practice, the Kultuurkamer, which consisted of a number of 'guilds', propagated the national socialist ideas among artists and monitored their activities. Everybody who was active in the arts had to be a member of the NKK and to become a member, a signed declaration of Aryan origin was required.
This inevitably met with opposition, which manifested itself, for instance, in the illegal pamphlets that were circulated and in which artists were called on not to join any of the Kultuurkamer guilds. The illegal paper De Vrije Kunstenaar (The free artist) was an initiative originating from the same circles.
