Diversa sed Una: A Literary Society’s Collection > Contents of the collection

The Diversa sed Una library includes 2143 titles. A large part of these titles are poetical works, works in prose and works for the stage. Among the latter, there are 425 short plays (tragedies, comedies and a large number of farces), of which 27 dating back to the seventeenth, 385 to the eighteenth and 13 to the nineteenth century. You may have a look at a number of them via these web pages. On view are, for instance, the tragedies De broedermoort van Kornelis en Johan de Witt (The murder of the brothers Kornelis – or Cornelis - and Johan de Witt) and Ada, Gravin van Holland (Ada, countess of Holland), both based on historical facts, but also roaring farces like De brassende dienstmeiden (The guzzling waitresses) and De bedrooge woekeraar (The usurer deceived).

Dordrecht’s history is also well represented in the DsU library, with, for instance, the Beschryvinge der stad Dordrecht (Description of the City of Dordrecht) by Matthys Balen, Dordrecht zoals het vroeger was (Dordrecht as it was in former days) by C.F. Bendorp and the Acta ofte handelingen des Nationalen Synodi, inden name onses Heeren Jesu Christi ghehouden door authoriteyt der Hoogh: Mogh: Heeren Staten Generael des Vereenighden Nederlandts tot Dordrecht, anno 1618 ende 1619 (Acta or acts of the National Synods held in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ on the authority of the Lofty Members of the States-General of the United Netherlands at Dordrecht, in the years 1618 and 1619). Of course, the library also includes encyclopaedias, including the French Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire universel (Encyplopedia or universal dictionary) in 58 volumes, compiled by De Felice.

Also on view are books written by members of the DsU or connected with the Society in some other way, such as the rules governing reading sessions, printed lectures, speeches by members and annual reports. In addition and to complete the picture, there are documents from the Diversa sed Una archives and from the DiEP library and collection of manuscripts.

The Diversa sed Una library is accessible via a printed catalogue compiled by the assistant archivist Jelle Nauta. This catalogue has been digitized as well and you can browse through it online.
